About The Turf Skatepark
The Turf Skatepark in Greenfield, Wisconsin is one of the most historically significant skateparks in the Midwest. Originally opened in 1979 as Surf-N-Turf and designed by California skatepark architect Art Kent, the park became famous for its massive concrete bowls and year-round indoor riding. Skate legends including Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, and Christian Hosoi skated the park during its original era, and it appeared in the Powell-Peralta film Public Domain. After closing in 1996, the bowls were buried beneath gravel and pavement near the Loomis Road interchange. In 2010, construction crews accidentally rediscovered part of the original park during highway work, sparking the “Save the Turf” movement and renewed efforts to preserve the historic concrete. The park officially reopened as a free public skatepark in 2025 following a restoration led by Grindline Skateparks. The rebuilt facility preserves the original 1979 bowls while adding modern street and flow features, creating a rare mix of first-generation skatepark history and contemporary design.
